Dentures for Improved Oral Functions and Esthetics

The set of dentures comprising artificial teeth and gums are intended to replace lost or removed teeth. Depending on the type of replacement carried out, two types of dentures are used - full or partial. Dentures are customized to replace the lost teeth in a size and color that matches existing teeth. If handled with care, dentures can last long and be comfortable for users. Here is additional information about dentures that will surely help you to understand more about it, if you are contemplating getting yourself one.

Types of dentures – full or partial
Full dentures typically refer to dentures that are customized and affixed to replace the entire row of teeth, either upper or bottom. Also known as complete dentures, they replace all lost natural teeth in either the top or bottom gum lines. These dentures are typically held in place by suction or oral adhesives. They can be removed easily for maintenance.

Partial dentures refer to those that are used as a replacement for a few missing teeth.  This is typically chosen over other tooth replacement methods, when adjacent existing teeth are not sufficiently strong to support a dental bridge. It is also used when more than one or two teeth are lost or require to be replaced. They are fastened to adjacent natural teeth and are removed before sleeping and for cleaning.

Dentures anchored with implants
These dentures are anchored by dental implants, which are titanium posts fused to the jawbone. The dentures are mounted atop the implants and are typically used when all of the teeth are missing, requiring the use of implants as a post for anchoring.  While the methods in which the dentures are attached may differ, the care that is required for the dentures is actually the same.

Materials of dentures resemble natural teeth
Advances in materials means that dentures are presently made from materials to make them closely resemble natural teeth. Typically made from resin, in addition to the earlier versions of porcelain, dentures typically last for about five to seven years. Users need to take adequate care of the dentures, ensuring that they are never dry, as a dried denture will lose its shape. The bottom portion of the dentures that look more like the gum lines are also made of similar material but with a more flexible polymer. This permits the portion to fit perfectly onto the gum line.
